I really want to recommend “Fanboys”. The story behind the film is a David-and-Goliath tale of a young filmmaker bringing his comedic vision to life against all odds and the film is finally being released on DVD after years of delays. Sadly, the drama behind-the-scenes doesn’t change the mediocre quality of the final product.
Just because the producers behind Kyle Newman’s “Fanboys” meddled with the film and arguably wanted to make it significantly worse, doesn’t mean that what has been released is a good movie to begin with. Everyone involved with “Fanboys” appears to have their hearts in the right place and the film has moments and performances that nearly redeem it, but it ultimately doesn’t click as either a laugh-out-loud comedy or an ode to the Lucas universe. Only hardcore “Star Wars” junkies need rent or buy.
What’s the deal with finales?
“Head Case” (9 p.m. today, STARZ), the highly improvised series about a psychiatrist to the stars, relies heavily on the quality of its guests. The good news is that the season finale features Jerry Seinfeld on the couch. That’s followed by the season finale of “Party Down” (9:30 p.m. today, STARZ), which I’ve promoted as one of my favorite shows of 2009. If my recommendation isn’t enough to draw you in, then consider that Kristen Bell appears as a rival caterer.
Lawn party
The CBS crimefighters are either superpatriotic or got a great deal on plane tickets to Washington. Joe Mantegna (”Criminal Minds”), Gary Sinise (”CSI: New York”) and Laurence Fishburne are all participating in “The 20th Anniversary National Memorial Day Concert” (7 p.m. Sunday, KTCA, Ch. 2), which takes place on the West Lawn of the Capitol. We’ll assume that David Caruso had unbreakable plans.
Diamond in the rough
I wouldn’t normally be drawn to the network miniseries about the power struggles that emit from a gem mine, but “Diamonds” (8 p.m. Sunday, KSTP, Ch. 5), which concludes at 8 p.m. Tuesday, has one mighty attraction: Judy Davis. You had me at Judy.
Another Veronica Mars alum hits Party Down in the season finale, and we have the exclusive first look.
Kristen Bell plays Uda Bengt, the über-serious leader of Valhalla Catering. She’s on a mission of catering perfection, and wouldn’t mind getting Ron (Ken Marino) fired if he so much as steps one toe out of line.
Here’s an exclusive sneak peek at the very scary Uda throwing orders at the Party Down crew while they double cater a wedding ceremony, which George Takei happens to be a guest at.
Also, watch Ron crumble into drunken oblivion at the thought of losing Super Crackers in the additional clip below. Since Party Down has been renewed for a second season, there may be hope for him yet.
Myriad Pictures has acquired all international rights from The Film Sales Company to Cheryl Hines’ dark romantic comedy Serious Moonlight following a marathon negotiating session that ran late into Wednesday night
The film premiered at Tribeca last month and is based on a screenplay by the late Adrienne Shelly. Meg Ryan, Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell and Justin Long star in the story of a woman whose revenge ploy on her unfaithful husband has unforeseen consequences.
Michael Roiff and Shelly’s husband Andy Ostroy produced. Myriad chief Kirk D’Amico negotiated the deal with Roiff, Ostroy, The Film Sales Company’s Andrew Herwitz and John Logigian. A domestic deal is expected shortly.
“This cast has tremendous chemistry and energy together and Cheryl is has clearly proven she has the skills and guts to have a long career as a winning director,” D’Amico said of Hines’ feature directorial debut.
Myriad Pictures has also boarded worldwide rights to the Craig Lucas comedy Birds Of America starring Hilary Swank, Matthew Perry and Ben Foster.
Ginnifer Goodwin and Lauren Graham also star in the story of a man who struggles to balance the crazy demands of his personal and professional lives.
The film is a Plum Pictures, iDeal Partners Film Fund production, in association with Hanson-Allen Films and Accomplice Films. Daniela Taplin Lundberg, Jana Edelbaum, Galt Niederhoffer and Celine Rattray produced.

Fans of “Grey’s Anatomy” have been on a death watch for most of the season as Izzie deals with the ramifications of a brain tumor. But at least she’s still hanging in there.
Already this TV season we’ve mourned the losses of Edie Britt (Nicollette Sheridan) of “Desperate Housewives,” Bill Buchanan (James Morrison) of “24,” Dr. Lawrence Kutner (Kal. Penn) of “House,” Warwick Brown (Gary Dourdan) of “CSI,” Quentin Fields (Robbie Jones) of “One Tree Hill,” Elle Bishop (Kristen Bell) of “Heroes” and Brad Bellick (Wade Williams) of “Prison Break.”
Of course, pimping out fatalities as a ploy to pull in viewers is nothing new, but during May sweeps the body count always dramatically rises. EW.com has even posted a death chart that projects the number of fatalities for various dramas.
But how much TV detah is too much? And when do we become numb to it all? In this morning’s newspapers I’ve got a column on TV’s obsession with death. I hope you check it out and let me know your take.

Always up for a night of fashion, Kristen Bell made her way over to a shopping party to benefit Clothes Off Ours Backs in Beverly Hills on Wednesday (April 1).
Hosted by La Perla and Perry Reeves, the “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” actress mingled with fellow attendee Jane Kaczmarek as she tried on a few different outfits throughout the evening.
I don’t know if Rob Thomas will change his mind in the future, but it isn’t looking so good for the VERONICA MARS movie.
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that according to Thomas, the current economy and lack of viewer interest has hurt the chances of a big screen jump for the series. Although “both [he and star Kristen Bell] would love to do it,” the momentum on the project seems to be lost.
However, Thomas doesn’t rule out continuing MARS as a comicbook series, as long as he gets to write it.
Fans can find a consolation prize in the fact that Bell will be guest starring on Thomas’ new show, PARTY DOWN, as a character with a similar name. She will be appearing in the May 22 finale as former Party Down employee Veronica Moon.

Kristen Bell is desperate to have an on-screen role in Gossip Girl series. The actress, who serves as a narrator of the two-season show, has talked with the Warner Bross’ bosses to have a role for her. “I’ve pitched (show creator) Josh Schwartz a couple of times for me to be on camera as a waitress or something but he wasn’t buying it. But hopefully he’ll change his mind in the future!”
