Kristen Bell: Life After ‘Mars’

With ”Veronica” behind her, the fan favorite tells us about her upcoming Comic-Con-friendly roles in ”Heroes,” and the movies ”Fanboys” and Judd Apatow’s ”Forgetting Sarah Marshall” — plus one on ”Lost” that got away.

If playing Veronica Mars for three years didn’t solidify her placement at the center of the geek universe, then this surely will: Kristen Bell will appear on NBC’s Heroes this fall for a multi-episode arc. ”Saying you’re a nerd is now the cool thing to do,” notes Bell, 27, who also plays a Star Wars fanatic in Fanboys (out January 2008) and headlines next summer’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall, from producer Judd Apatow. ”The fansites are obsessed with her…. It’s [her] very approachable charm,” explains Fanboys director Kyle Newman. Quips Marshall co-producer Rodney Rothman, ”I guess she’s cornered the market on losers. The girl’s got chops, man.” And she can also speak for herself. Without further ado…

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What’s life been like since Mars?
KRISTEN BELL: Right after Veronica Mars wrapped [in April], I left for Hawaii [to film Marshall]. I was on cloud nine, obviously, because I was getting to work with Judd Apatow’s group. I’d really wanted to be a part of that very small pool of lucky actors.

What’s the film about?
It is about a guy whose girlfriend breaks up with him, and they’d [had] this trip planned for Hawaii and neither of them thinks the other is going to take advantage of it. So they [end] up in Hawaii; she’s with her new boyfriend, and chaos ensues.

Sounds like it was a change from The CW.
I was knee-deep in improv. Being able to come up with my own stuff and [being asked], ”What would you like your character to do here?” It was a lovely experience.

The Apatow films are doing really well. For a while, it was nothing but PG-13 comedies.
I have the mouth of a sailor. I have to remember not to drop F-bombs when I’m ordering my lunch. Nothing is supposed to be offensive about it, it’s just meant to be real.

So tell us about Fanboys.
These Star Wars nerds drive cross-country to break into George Lucas’ ranch and steal a print of [The Phantom Menace] so that their friend with a terminal illness can see it before it comes out.

You sort of have fanboys of your own. Are you happy about that?
I’m really flattered. I love nerds. Comic-Con junkies are the tastemakers of tomorrow. Isn’t that funny? The tables have turned. They’re a fiercely intelligent audience, which makes filmmakers want to please them. But I’m looking for the fangirl to come out of her shell a little, to be more accepted.

All right, you’ve held out long enough: What’s up with Heroes?
I’m on a sugar high, to be totally honest. For me, starting a new project is kind of like switching high schools — that feeling of excitement and nerves. And because everyone is so nice and I know so many people involved, I feel like I’m switching high schools — but one that a lot of my friends have already transferred to.

You’re kind of the go-to girl these days. You’re also narrating The CW’s fall drama Gossip Girl. And we hear that Lost was trying to scoop you up?
I’m flattered that I would even be considered for the other roles. [But] I was really excited when there was the prospect of working in town and on one of the best shows on television. There comes a point where I’d like to fall asleep in my own bed.

What can you tell us about your role?
[Elle] comes in with a bang. She’s a bit of a criminal in the beginning. I’m not even sure if they know whether she’s going to be bad or good. She has a link to H.R.G. and Peter. She becomes integral to the mystery on the show.

Did you have to do a table read or go out and audition for the producers?
No, I didn’t. Doesn’t that feel like I’m on another planet? It’s flattering. Everyone has the right to see actors audition [so] they get what’s right for their projects. But when you have someone coming to you saying, ”I know you’re right,” it just makes you blush. I’m over the moon.

Kristen Bell eyes ‘Veronica’ Movie

Kristin Bell may get the chance to return to her cancelled TV character Veronica Mars in a movie. The blonde actress, 27, was devastated when the show was pulled earlier this year after three seasons, but she has since landed a role in Heroes.

However, Bell tells TV Guide website that her student investigator character may come back to life on the big screen.

She says, “I knew some things that were going to happen in Season 4 that I’m not going to dare say, ’cause that’s probably what the movie is going to be about. I wish I could tell you. Because it’s really good.”

Kristen Bell Sees “No Future” for Mars Movie

Your best chance for seeing Neptune again may involve a telescope, as Veronica Mars herself is bearish on the prospect of a big-screen follow-up to the cult TV series. “There is no future, unfortunately,” Bell tells MTV.com, when asked about the rumored Mars movie. “Everybody’s really, really sad to see it go…. [But] she has been laid to rest [and] may she rest in peace.”

Although Bell says she has yet to be involved in a single discussion about possibly revisiting her supersleuther via the silver screen, she won’t rule out the notion of one day getting her PI on again. “Depends on how well I age,” she quips, making us miss her delivery and wit all the more. Sigh. Source

3rd Season DVD news and graphics

Finaly some news about the DVD:

The Veronica Mars – The Complete 3rd Season listing at TLA Video shows an October 23rd release date for the 6-DVD set. There’s also a listing at Columbia House. We checked with Warner, who says the October date is correct and it should be officially announced shortly.

Because that announcement isn’t formal yet, Warner would not confirm so far the other information at TLA Video’s listing. But we’ll pass on that it shows a $59.99 SRP, with English Dolby Digital 5.1 and subtitles in French and Spanish, plus closed captioning. The 20 episodes will run 900 minutes, plus there will be Deleted Scenes, Audio commentary with creator Rob Thomas, a “Making of” featurette for the CW pitch presentation with Veronica in the FBI, and a Gag Reel.

VM is (officially) dead

The CW has officially pulled the plug on Veronica Mars. Series creator Rob Thomas confirmed the news for me via e-mail just moments ago.

“I’m afraid I have to report that Veronica Mars is officially dead. At least in TV show form. There’s really no way that it can happen now. I’m not sure the CW should’ve given the glimmer of hope. I think Dawn Ostroff genuinely would have liked to have continued on with a version of the show, but there was too much resistance around her. At the end of the day, it would’ve been kinder had the band aid simply been ripped off rather peeled away in than this agonizingly slow manner.”

Ironically, the news comes just as Veronica Mars fans — inspired by Jericho’s 11th hour resurrection — are in the midst of bombarding The CW with thousands of Mars candy bars in advance of that June 15 deadline.

Kristen will miss Veronica

Read bellow a Kristen telephone conference, where she talked about the end of Veronica and her new movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”:

DETROIT – Kristen Bell is finding it tough to let go of Veronica Mars, the wisecracking teenage TV sleuth she portrayed for three seasons.

Asked what she would miss most about the character, Bell didn’t hesitate: “Other than everything?”

“It feels sort of like graduating high school. You really only recognize how special it was once it’s gone away,” Bell told The Associated Press in a recent phone interview.

“And of course everyone graduates from different jobs then they move on, but I don’t know I’ll find as special a show ever again,” the 26-year-old actress said. “I think I’m only truly realizing that now.”

The show, which was ratings challenged but a cult hit, was canceled May 17. Bell, though, hasn’t given up all hope just yet.

The network, she said, has until June 15 to tell the show’s producers whether it might be brought back as a midseason replacement.

CW spokesman Jeff Tobler confirmed the June 15 deadline.

Even if “Veronica Mars” doesn’t make it back onto the small screen, Bell says she would be happy to reprise her role in a feature film.

“I’m game. I would work for (‘Veronica’ creator) Rob Thomas again in a heartbeat,” she said. “Not just because of his brilliance, but because he’s a great guy.”

Critics loved “Veronica Mars” from the get-go, praising Bell’s whipsmart heroine, the show’s take on high-school politics and the portrayal of Veronica’s relationship with her father (Enrico Colantoni).

Set in the fictional seaside town of Neptune, Calif., Bell’s character tackled the ups and downs of high-school life while solving crimes. The just-completed third season shifted Veronica and her pals to nearby Hearst College. She still solved crimes and battled authority, but the ratings woes continued.

While Bell’s old show doesn’t have a place in the fall, her new one does.

She’s providing the voice of the narrator (something she also did on “Veronica”) for the CW’s new “Gossip Girl.” The show centers on a group of prep-school teenagers in Manhattan.

Meanwhile, Bell is in Hawaii filming “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” a comedy produced by Judd Apatow (“The 40 Year-Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up”). She plays the title character.

The actress says she is enjoying the adult humor and improvisational nature of an Apatow production.

“It’s not that cliched romantic comedy where boy meets girl,” she said. “Nothing is really cliched in this movie. It’s all very real.”
