Italy would’ve been nice and all, but we were more than happy to walk on over to the lower-Manhattan set for the scoop on the new fantastical romantic comedy When in Rome. Kristen Bell plays an love-weary “gallerina” who, while in Rome for her sister’s wedding, steals coinage from a “fountain of love” and is soon being chased by a band of suitors (they’re played by Will Arnett, Jon Heder, Dax Shepard and Danny De Vito, though we’ll say the odds-on favorite is the above-the-title Josh Duhamel). Here’s our traveler’s guide to — OK, 10 fun behind-the-scenes facts from — ‘Rome.’

1 female star + 5 male stars = More funny.
What clearly separates Rome from your average rom-com is the addition of the wildcard suitors in Shepard as a model, Arnett as a painter, Heder as a street magician and De Vito as a sausage king (actual occupation). “They’re all very unique and very eccentric,” Bell said. “So when they come together, the scenes with them just interacting is hysterical.” At first Duhamel feared, as the straight man, he’d be “the most boring character in the movie,” but his journalist Nick was bestowed one idiosyncratic characteristic: He has no peripheral vision. And tunnel vision is funny.

Filming rom-coms is dangerous.
You wouldn’t think a romantic comedy would be all that physically grueling for one of the stars of Transformers, but Duhamel had a trying experience shooting one of Rome’s only stunt shots, which required him to get hit by a car, roll onto the hood and tumble off it in NYC’s highly trafficked Columbus Circle, near Central Park. “The first couple times I go ass over teakettle into the street,” he said. Even worse, the actor had to perform the scene in front of a massive crowd, which included his father, who playfully taunted him with each gaffe. It’s not surprising a video of the shot surfaced on YouTube claiming Duhamel had been hit by an actual car while filming. “I figured that might happen because there were so many people watching,” he said. Maybe it was his dad.

Bell got a workout.
In the scene we watched filmed — during the Italian wedding of Beth’s sister Joan (Alexis Dziena) — Bell struggles frantically to smash an antique vase against the floor, a local matrimonial tradition (“the number of pieces symbolize the years of happiness you wish for the bride and groom,” the actress explained). She failed repeatedly, one take after the next. Could she ever hope of breaking the prop vase? “No, it’s rubber,” Bell said before deadpanning, “It’s indestructible, like my spirit.”

There will NOT be full-frontal male nudity in this one. We think.
“God I hope not,” Bell answered when asked if any of the actors in Rome will make like Jason Segel in her last romantic comedy, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and go The Full Monty. Of course, with Danny De Vito in the picture, who regularly raunches it up on the edgy FX sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you never know. (Good news for readers potentially haunted by that image: Rome is rated PG-13.)

Danny De Vito is The Man.
“Danny’s known as the maybe the smallest guy in showbiz,” Duhamel said of the five-foot star of Twins and Batman Returns in ‘Rome,’ “but he’s got such a big heart and such an air about him. He’s truly a good guy, there’s no attitude to him. He’ll just sit and bulls**t with you for hours, even after he’s done shooting.” Duhamel pauses and transforms into fan mode. “It’s always nice when someone who you’ve watched since you were a kid turns out to be a really cool dude.”

Bell won’t play favorites.
Despite Bell’s offscreen relationship with co-star Shepard — the two have been dating since 2007, and she sat on the actor’s lap in between takes the night we were on set – she quite politically correctly refused to pick a favorite Rome suitor. “Gosh, nail me to the wall,” she joked. “I couldn’t, they’re all so unique.” We’ll take that as “Dax.”

Duhamel alternated between a wedding scene and war zone.
In the midst of filming Rome in New York, Duhamel went to Pennsylvania for four days to shoot scenes for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. “There’s a different vibe on every set,” he said. “And the difference between this set and that set, it’s just literally different ends of the spectrum.” One day Duhamel’s in a tux attending a wedding, the next day he’s in military fatigues defending the world from evil ‘bots. “You just have to put yourself in a different mindset. You gotta be ready to go on [the 'Transformers' set]. Otherwise you get called out in front of the whole crew.”

Bell comes to terms with schoolgirl crush.
The actress said she can’t relate to Beth’s dilemma of having multiple suitors (if it’s happened it was unbeknownst to her), but has experienced the other side of group-lust. “In middle school my girlfriends and I always had a crush on the same guy, but he was someone [older] who was completely unattainable who didn’t know we were alive.” The most memorable object of her affection? A guy named Cory. “I don’t know that I ever made contact with Cory, let alone said one word to him, but I swore that I was in love with him.” You blew it big time, Cory, wherever you are.

The leads burned for Rome.
When actually in Rome to shoot, the two leads relished in different aspects of La dolce vita. Bell saw all the sights, but found enchantment in the simpler things, “just being on a street where there’s a real shoemaker and a real dressmaker and it looks like time has forgotten them.” Duhamel, meanwhile, who minored in art at Minot State University, ate up the breathtaking Baroque architecture, and visited landmarks like the Pantheon and Vatican. “I got my very Catholic grandmother a rosary blessed by the Pope, which put me in her good graces.” What, she’s not a Transformers fan?

Josh Duhamel moonlights as a (fake) mugger.
The actor lowers his voice when asked how he spends his downtime on set. “Mostly f**k with the director.” Not only the director, but also his co-stars. He recounts how earlier that day, he spotted Dax Shepherd a couple blocks from set, looking down and texting as he walked: “So I jumped into his pathway and went, “‘Give me your money!’” Duhamel said he spied his director Mark Steven Johnson, quite randomly as it was far from set, on a Saturday afternoon off, and pulled the same prank. “That’s been my trademark,” he said. “My fake mug bit.” He’s not exaggerating. An hour later, as I’m on my way home, a good half-block from the set on a desolate street about to hail a cab, I jump as someone sticks their finger against my back and yells, “Give me all your money!” It’s Josh Duhamel.

Kristen Bell is one of our fave Hollywood gals, and not just because she gave us a sexy Josh Duhamel love-status report!

First off, Kristen’s adorable (yes—we’re superficial), and she knows how to be the Girl Next Door while also having that slightly naughty appeal. Clearly, it’s a balance she’s picked up from boyfriend (and regular Blind Vicer) Dax Shepard.

We recently caught up with K.B., who stars alongside Dax and that other sexy bad boy, Josh Duhamel. Fergie’s man and Kristen both star in the upcoming rom-com, When in Rome.

Listen to Kristen downright salivate as she gabs:

Let’s cut straight to the point—we know your boyfriend’s in the flick, but Josh Duhamel. Wow.

They’re both awesome guys. Josh is maybe the prettiest male ever to walk the earth! He’s gorgeous, right? Man.

And the gorgeous ones are always the ones who get into trouble…
No, Josh is amazing. Seriously, just a really good person.

Clearly we understand what Fergie sees in him…those eyes.
The funny thing is no one is going to realize how funny Josh Duhamel is. You have no idea! Honest to God, he might be the funniest guy in the movie. He’s somehow convinced he’s not funny, but he’s hilarious! He’s a comedian in this movie, not the heartthrob.

So no one had to twist your arm to sign alongside such a stud like Josh and, oh yeah, and your boyfriend, too!
Right! But also five guys revolve around the girl [played by Bell in When in Rome], and she didn’t want any of them. I really liked that message. So many times we see the heartbroken girl, or the girl who needs the guy to complete her, and [Bell's character] didn’t want any of that.

Still, if we didn’t know how much K.Bell hearted her Dax, we’d think she had a little bit of a crush on her dreamy costar!

Can’t blame her though, who wouldn’t? But Fergie has nothing to worry about…with Kristen, that is.

In the romantic comedy When in Rome, Beth (Kristen Bell) is a young, ambitious New Yorker who is completely unlucky in love. Disillusioned with romance, she travels to Rome, where she impulsively steals some coins from a reputed fountain of live. The coins attract an assortment of odd suitors, including a sausage merchant, a street magician and an artist. But, when a persistent reporter throws his hat in the ring, she wonders if his love is the real thing.

During a press conference to promote the film, co-stars Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel talked about how much fun they had making When in Rome together.

Q: Kristen, are you as much of a workaholic as your character? If you met a guy, would he have to be as important to you as your job?

Kristen: I think your significant other should be way more important than your work. Personally, I love working. I don’t know that I’d say I’m a workaholic because I also love relaxing. I don’t think I’m a workaholic, but currently I feel I’m at a really lovely place and I’m grateful to be where I am, so I like working too.

Q: Your character doesn’t believe in magic or superstitions. What about yourself?

Kristen: I’m not very superstitious at all. I never have been. I’ll walk under ladders.

Josh: One of her hobbies is breaking mirrors, in fact.

Kristen: Absolutely! I like to smash mirrors, any chance I get. No, I’m not superstitious at all.

Q: Kristen, how was the experience of carrying this film for you?

Kristen: First of all, being surrounded by these guys was so flattering because they all have a style of comedy that I just really envy and often laugh out loud at them. I was grateful for the opportunity. I’m glad that they had the faith in me to be able to pull it off, and I just tried to do the best I could.

Q: Josh, you had the opportunity in this to exercise the physical comedy muscle that people haven’t often seen you do, with all of the pratfalls. How was it to get the opportunity to do that? Was that fun or did you worry about hurting yourself?

Josh: (Director) Mark Steven Johnson worried about me hurting myself more than I did.

Kristen: We took out a huge policy on his face, before we started this movie.

Josh: If Mark and I had any arguments in this film, it was for that. There was a scene where I was supposed to run into this car, but the stunt coordinator had it set up where the car was going to sweep out my leg, I was going to roll under the front of the hood and roll up onto the windshield, and look in and see that it was my friend, Puck (Bobby Moynihan). It wasn’t the most well-conceived stunt ever performed, and it took us a few times. The first two times we did it, I literally went right over the top of the car. One time, I fell on my shoulder and neck. And then, another time, I fell some other way over the other edge of the car. They almost pulled the plug on the stunt, but I talked Mark into letting me do it one more time because I’d figured it out and when we did it right. We literally took out the windshield on the front of the car. But, this was more in line with the way I am, anyway. I’m more of a klutz than anything, so I just had a lot of fun coming up with as much stuff as we could.

Q: Kristen and Josh, what was it like to do a romantic comedy together? How did you build that relationship enough, so that it pays off in the end for the audience?

Kristen: It’s definitely a difficult thing to capture. I’ve seen a ton of movies where I’ve believed the couple, and I’ve seen a ton of movies where I have not believed them at all. Unfortunately, as an audience member, you check out if you don’t believe them. So, we knew it was really important. That’s something you trust your director to bring out as well. But, Josh and I got along so well, right from the very beginning. I think it was just natural that it read as romantic chemistry because we got along very well in real life. It’s kind of a crap shoot. You just have to hope for the best because you really don’t know until you’re in the editing booth and the director figures out whether or not we captured it. What I liked about this is that it’s not the sad, downtrodden girl, who is just chasing after the guy all the time and revolving around his world. This was the opposite. Who wouldn’t want all of these guys chasing after them? I was like, “Okay, I’ll do it!”

Josh: For Kristen and I, because we had to fall in love so quick, in order in a way to propel the movie through, we had to really make those first couple scenes work, at the wedding and the stuff afterwards, when we get back to New York. Otherwise, it would have felt like there was nothing there to begin with, so you wouldn’t understand what she was really chasing after. We really focused on that wedding scene, and trying to establish as much of a love-at-first-sight thing as we could, so that when she got back to New York and all these guys were chasing after her, it would make some sense.

Kristen: We shot that wedding scene very, very late in the game, so we had already established a friendship and it was much easier to connect immediately. We knew each other’s rhythms and we knew how we were going to play it. So, our first meeting was actually the end of the movie. The way in which you shoot a movie is really beneficial to your actors, sometimes. We lucked out there.

Q: What was the atmosphere like on the set?

Kristen: I’m going to say loud. There was malarkey, here and there.

Q: Were there any on-set bloopers?

Josh: There were no mistakes in this movie.

Kristen: There was a lot of laughing, off camera. There was a lot of ruining other people’s shots because we were laughing.

Q: Kristen, do you subscribe to the adage that you’ve got to play the character with the utmost seriousness when you’re doing the comic scenes?

Kristen: Yes and no. You have to be the character, but the character was written fairly klutzy. People embarrass themselves on a daily basis. I know I do. And this character did a lot, which I think is what makes her likeable and also leaves room for a lot of funnies. That vase breaking scene allowed me to get really physical, which sometimes when you see people getting physical, it’s just very funny. I’m very klutzy in real life and we just captured that on film. Basically, there wasn’t much training or stunt coordinating going on. I would just trip. Mark would happen to be rolling the camera and we would put it in the movie.

Q: Would you say you constantly fall over things in real life?

Kristen: There’s a fair amount of that, yes. I also bruise like a peach. I knock into things and I’m not the most coordinated person in the world.

Q: How was your experience in Italy?

Kristen: Glorious.

Josh: I loved it. The only thing was that it was just so hot. They were in the middle of a heat wave when we were shooting the stuff in Rome.

Kristen: And Italy has not discovered air conditioning. That was different for us because we were so spoiled with every room being air conditioned.

Josh: But, for myself, I got to study a lot of art history in college, and it was always a dream of mine to go to Rome and see some of the things there. That was the best part of it for me. I had a day off when we were there and I rented a Vespa and just went out. I didn’t know where I was going, but I got to see a bunch of the sights in Rome. I still can’t believe that I had the balls to do that because there’s nine million Vespas running around and cars, and I did not knowing where I was going. It was a great day.

Q: Kristen, is it true there’s going to be a Veronica Mars movie?

Kristen: Not as of yet. The way it stands right now, from the information that I have, is that Rob Thomas wrote the script, or the treatment or synopsis or whatever, and we brought it to Warner Bros., and Joel Silver and Warner Bros. had said there was no enthusiasm to make a Veronica Mars movie, at this point. That means they don’t think they can sell tickets. I think that the Veronica Mars fans would say otherwise. But, it’s all a matter of convincing them that people would see it. I know some of the online groups that are still so dedicated are trying to do that, which is awesome, but at this point, we have no control. One day, Rob and I will just shoot it in his backyard. I’m positive of that.

When In Rome opens on January 29th

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) — It looks like “Veronica Mars” won’t be heading to the big screen.

“No,” creator Rob Thomas told me when I asked if the much-ballyhooed movie project is ever going to happen. “I would write it if anyone would finance it. If anyone’s interested in making that movie I am available, Kristen’s [Bell] available. I would love to do it. I think the closest we came was Joel [Silver] pushing it at Warner Bros. and they didn’t bite. It has sort of gone away.”

Thomas was at the TCA Winter Press Tour on Saturday as part of Starz’s promotional efforts for the second season of “Party Down” where I managed to snag a few minutes of his time following the panel.

“I get Google Alerts on ‘Veronica Mars‘ and I see this non-stop sort of messaging about the movie,” he continued. “And I’ve heard things, like I read an interview [where] I think Kristen’s telling people I have written the script. I have a treatment, I don’t have a script. So she shouldn’t have jumped the gun on that but I am ready to write a script.”

Kristen did an interview for Health Magazine and she is feautured in the January issue. We have found one incredible outtake from the shoot and she just looks so fantastic, you can view it here.

She’s the voice of Gossip Girl, the Sarah Marshall that Jason Segel had trouble forgetting, and the love interest of some surprising suitors in her new movie When In Rome.

But Kristen Bell, 29, has some more tricks up her white cotton J.Crew sleeve: she is not afraid to stand up in a crowded restaurant during breakfast to demonstrate her favorite workout moves, and is so knowledgeable about the caloric and fat content of every food item she mentions, she could be an iPhone App!

Over an egg-white breakfast burrito, the Midwest-born vegetarian—currently two years into her relationship with actor Dax Shepard—chats with Health about everything from Madonna arms (she’s a fan) to the real secret to a happy relationship.

Q: In your upcoming film When In Rome, you fish some coins out of a magic fountain and end up with some unexpected love interests. Have you ever been surprised to like someone you didn’t expect?

A: Not really, because looks don’t matter that much to me, so I kind of give everybody a chance. When I was single, my eyes were always open. There was nobody off the list. When my gut told me to date, I followed it. And sometimes it was someone I never would have picked out of a lineup. I find weird people really interesting. There’s nothing interesting about a normal person.

Q: What is the best and worst part of having a limited diet as a vegetarian?

A: I don’t find it limited at all, I really don’t. For some people it will make you feel great, and for me, it works. I think you have to listen to your body. If you’re eyeing the cheesecake, just have a little bit. Work on being satisfied with one bite and not blacking out and having the entire pie—which I’ve fully done before. I don’t believe in depriving yourself. I think life is too short … and so am I. [laughs]

Q: How do you measure health?

A: I never step on the scale, because I don’t believe weight is a measure of health. I have too many girlfriends who’ve been curvy and voluptuous and healthy in every possible way to take any of that body bullshit seriously. It’s ironic that I would be saying that, because I was blessed with a very fast metabolism. But women that wear womanly curves like [Mad Men's] Christina Hendricks? She is the epitome of sexy to me. She’s got boobs and a butt for days, and she works it. I just think it’s beautiful.

Q: Got any healthy snacking secrets?

A: I put everything I can possibly find in the house in a salad. I call them garbage disposal salads. Over a bed of spinach or romaine or butter lettuce, I’ll put tomatoes, avocados, carrots, cucumbers, strawberries, raspberries, sesame seeds, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese. Once you have all of these cool fruits and vegetables in there, you don’t need dressing.

Q: What is your favorite way to stay fit?

A: Laughing! I work with a lot of actors, and there’s nothing funnier to me than when actors are super into themselves. But really, I find
that if I schedule social interaction while I’m working out, it’s so much better. My girlfriends and I hike all the time. On the hike, ankle weights are a bitch, but I do it. Or one day a week, instead of meeting a friend for cocktails, we’ll do 300 sit-ups and 50 push-ups together. It’s about working for your goals together.

Q: You’ve been dating Dax for two years. What makes him different from the rest?

A: Cause he’s mine [smiles]. I have a very high opinion of him. I think he has a lot of integrity. I think he is very much a gentleman. I think he’s kind. Extremely funny. And aware. With him, it’s honestly a toss-up between he is an excellent communicator and the funniest man I’ve ever met.

Q: What was it like dating a guy who had a superfamous ex [Kate Hudson]? Was it hard? Did you care?

A: Not really. I think that girls can get tangled up in who the guy was before they met you, but I think that it’s really important to stay focused on, “I met this man on this day. From what he does from this point on, for however long I know him and am with him, that’s what’s important.”

Q: Why do you think laughing is so good for your health?

A: Abs, first of all. It legitimately builds muscle and burns calories. It also releases more serotonin, which just makes you happier on a daily basis. It’s like affection or touch that lasts longer than seven seconds produces oxytocin. Both are so important to have in your brain and your body all the time. I hug my friends every time I leave them because I want more oxytocin. I’m an oxytocin addict! There is so much scientific evidence about our brain chemistry. If there’s free oxytocin out there, git it! And free serotonin, git it! You don’t need a prescription, don’t be a fool!

Q: We saw you make a muscle on the Craig Ferguson show, and you didn’t have “Madonna arms” but perfectly toned ones. What’s your secret?

A: Well, I will tell you, I love Madonna arms. I think women who look strong are breathtaking. I think Angela Bassett has always been gorgeous. But I find that if you take a deep breath, look up on one workout Web site what to do for your arms, you can handle it.

I do biceps, I do lifting the buckets [for the shoulders]—the shoulder is the key to making your arm look really well-rounded. If I do three sets of lifting the buckets, three sets of biceps and three sets of triceps, that’s what works for me. My boyfriend doesn’t love it if my arms get too muscular, but if I had my way, I would look like Angela Bassett. I use the lesser weights to look more attractive for him, you know? Of course it’s also way easier on me. I’m ike, “Aw, man, you don’t want me to be superfit? OK.” [laughs]

Q: What’s your secret for great skin?

A: I’m a big fan of hot washcloths. When I wake up in the morning and when I go to bed at night, I put on a hot towel. It just opens up your pores, and makes you feel so spoiled. I also rely on hyaluronic acid. I’ve been using one by Peter Thomas Roth called Viz-1000. Basically it pulls moisture from the air into your skin.

Q: You’re a big fan of sleep, right?

A: Big time. I just think it’s mandatory to have eight hours. A lot of people say, “Oh, I can totally get by on four hours.” But there are hormones given to your body after a certain number of hours, and you’re missing that balance if you’re only sleeping four hours a night. I don’t have any problem sleeping. I’m so bad I could lay down right here and fall asleep. I’m borderline narcoleptic.

Q: You sing and dance in the upcoming Burlesque with Christina Aguilera and Cher. What’s that been like?

A: I am not a dancer by trade, and I had to learn all the dances, and the dancers were unbelievably supportive. I have never felt so much good female energy around me. I find that I can’t take my eyes off of them. I’m 99% sure I will leave this movie a lesbian!

Q: You sing in the film. Do you have a favorite place to sing offscreen?

A: The car. I sing out loud to myself a lot. I love Siriusly Sinatra on my XM radio. I’m a big fan of crooners like Mel Tormé, Frank Sinatra, and Johnny Mathis, and I sing out loud in my car to them a lot. Sometimes I get weird looks, but I don’t care. I’m never going to see those jo-jos again!

Q: You’ve mentioned liking reality shows. What show would you be on?

A: I would say Jeopardy!, but I would have to have a lot more skill. I was asked to be on the celebrity edition of Jeopardy!, but I got way too nervous. There are two ways that could go: I could either look like an idiot, or the questions could be so easy, I look like an idiot. Because the questions they ask the celebrities are like, “Is this cat a cat or a dog?” And you’re like, “What is a cat!” I just think, “Wait a minute, guys, do we really have to dumb it down that much for the celebs?”

Q: How would your friends complete this sentence: “Kristen is the kind of girl who always ________.”

A: Trips. Or maybe, Kristen is the kind of girl that’s like a Granny that always offers you a sandwich when you come over. I love to have my friends over, make them lemonade, and force them to eat my food. I have those instincts.

Q: What philosophy or phrase would you say guides you in life the most?

A: Eleanor Roosevelt once said something amazing that I took to heart: the three requirements for happiness are knowing you’re honest with yourself and to others, knowing you’ve done the best job you could in your personal life and in your work life, and your ability to love others.

    Q: When are you happiest?

A: At the bottom of a puppy pile at my house when I get home at night. There is nothing better.
